AI systems are increasingly pervasive within the devices, apps and services that young children and their parents, caregivers, and teachers use. And while AI ethics has converged into a growing consensus on high-level ethical AI principles, there remains limited academic review and engagement with a lens on children’s issues and responsible AI, even more so in relation to the early childhood domain. This session will explore the current state of AI ethics research in relationship to early childhood development and how these principles are moving into policy and practice. As Co-Chair of Generation AI, Zelda Yanovich will share findings from the University of Oxford Generation AI symposium held in September 2024 and Jana Fleming will explore their relevance to early childhood education. This session aims to demystify AI while simultaneously examining the challenges it presents to educators and parents seeking to understand how AI can support early learning and development.

A recent survey of over 700 UAE-based parents shows that parents are ambivalent about the use of technology at school. Many parents agree that technology use at school is excessive, meaningless, and replacing the teacher. Moreover, parents do not understand how to evaluate the digital tools used in schools nor do they understand the components of meaningful learning with technology and how these components are integrated into ed techs and classrooms. This talk will unpack the preliminary (in the process of publication) data of a study of parents' perceptions of children's interactions with education technology and provide administrators, teachers, and ed tech companies with strategies to talk to parents about the positive uses of technology in schools.

Having conducted first and second hand research on behaviours around technology, I have extensive data that suggests student behaviours with technology are strongly effected by adult behaviours. We are not in a position to support our children in an online world that we are somewhat incapable of handling ourselves. Our children will be better users of tech than us, despite what we think. As an advocate for new UK and US legislation to smart phones and social media, I share my evidence on why our behaviours with technology matter now more so than ever before.
