Elizabeth McCullough

Head of Science

South View School

Elizabeth is passionate about equipping students with real-world skills that extend beyond the classroom and into adulthood. As Head of Science at South View School, she believes education should prepare students for life, not just exams. Last year, she launched a Girl's Club offering sessions on changing tyres, cooking, financial literacy - developing student collaboration, confidence and empowerment. These activities reflect the core values she promotes—problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-reliance, essential for success in today’s world. With 12 years of teaching experience and 5 as Head of Department, she is known for her hands-on approach to teaching Science, particularly Chemistry. She brings the subject to life and ensures every student feels capable of success. Her focus extends to preparing students for science based careers that go beyond traditional paths, exploring emerging fields that will make students future-proof, regardless of career choice. To deepen her commitment, she plans to research the impact of life skills education with CEAR, aiming to implement more effective strategies to promote life skills within the classroom. The success of the Girl’s Club, featured on Lovin Dubai, The National News, and Dubai Eye, highlighted a growing need for life skills education for both students and adults. Elizabeth believes that everyone has valuable skills to share, and learning should empower individuals to thrive and navigate the complexities of the future.

SPEAKER SESSIONS

14 November, 2024 | 11:05 to 11:25
The Critical Role of Life Skills Education in Schools

In this interactive workshop, I will share the critical importance of integrating life skills education within the classroom to prepare students for real-world challenges. Participants will explore how teaching practical skills like problem-solving, collaboration, and financial literacy not only enhances academic achievement but also equips students for adulthood and future careers that may not yet exist. I will include a short case study on my Girl's Club initiative, launched last year, which focused on building confidence, independence, and essential life skills in students. We will examine how these skills extend beyond the classroom, can help students make informed choices now and in the future. By connecting classroom learning to life outside of school, this session aims to empower educators to create future-proof learners, prepared for whatever paths they choose.
