Global Network of Sustainable Building professionals and researchers to meet in Dubai

UAE's first research based university, The British University in Dubai (BUiD) and Emirates Green Building Council(EGBC) have succeeded in attracting a major International conference on Sustainable Buildings (SB 13) to Dubai.

The SB 13 is a series of conferences that will take place in different cities of the world in the year 2013.

Some of the cities where these events are to be held are Munich, Vancouver, Oulu, California, Seoul, Prague, Singapore, Hong Kong, Cape town, Guinares and in Dubai from 8th to 10th Dec 2013 at the Knowledge Village Conference Centre.

Dubai SB 13 conference series is internationally managed and organised by some of the leading sustainability professional bodies such as Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative (SBCI),International Institute for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE),International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC),International Council in Building and Construction (CIB).

"We are happy to host the International SB 13 conference in Dubai and look forward to a successful event .As Sustainability and Construction are two key areas of focus for a greener and better UAE and Gulf region, but whilst everyone is concerned there is a lack o in-depth knowledge to address the issue. And a conference such as this will help attract some of the best practices in this field and enable BUiD to provide a platform for International and regional experts to share and disseminate knowledge on Sustainable Buildings," said Prof Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice-Chancellor of BUiD.

Following a strong proposal by Prof Bassam Abu Hijleh, Atkins Chair and Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT, to the SB 13 organising committee, BUiD and EGBC were successful in attracting this conference to Dubai.

The title of the Conference is Advancing the Green Agenda, Technology, Practices and Policies. It aims to bring together academic practitioners and researchers in the field of Sustainable Building.

Themes for the conference are Guideline, Policies and Finance, Building Materials, Urban Level Sustainability, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, Energy use, Active systems, Indoor Environmental Quality and Comfort. Regional and international experts in the field of Sustainable Buildings are invited to present papers at the international conference series.

First step towards participation is to send in abstract of up to 250 words for any of the conference's themes; abstract submission date is 1st March 2013.

"Some of the advantages of constructing sustainable buildings is ensuring that there is increased energy efficiency, conservation of water and resources, reducing waste and pollution, good indoor air quality for better health of occupants. BUiD's SB 13 conference aims to engage experts regionally and internationally to ensure latest research in the field is shared at the conference to educate the participants on best practices for Sustainable Buildings," said Prof Bassam Abu Hijleh, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT at BUiD.

He added, "Research has shown that sustainable materials have the same quality but more durability compared to their non sustainable counterparts. Material sourced for sustainable buildings is from project sites which helps boost the local economies. Sustainable buildings are nearly 40% more energy efficient compared to traditional buildings. Through SB 13 conference BUiD will try to drive the key points home."

With depleting global energy resources, energy efficient buildings create value for the inhabitants, Environment and wider society. BUiD's first step in sustainable efforts for SB 13 was to source the talent for designing the conference logo from the student community of UAE for which we held an inter college logo design competition.

The winning entry was from Taher Salah Eldanaf who is a Masters student of Sustainable Design of the Built Environment programme; it is the only programme of its kind in the entire region.

Taher Salah, said, "I am very happy that my logo design was selected for a major international conference such as SB 13, I would like to thank BUiD for giving me the opportunity to showcase my skills on an international platform."

BUiD's Masters in Sustainable Design and Built Environment is one of its most successful programmes and till date it has attracted nearly 130 part-time and full-time students, with active sponsorship and support from Atkins, the World's leading Engineering and Design Consultancies.

Last year's series of regional Conferences attracted up to 1500 delegates and on an average each conference attracted 150 to 200 delegates. The Global Sustainable Conference attracted nearly 800 senior dignitaries and professionals related to the sustainable industry from more than 40 countries.

The SB 13 Dubai Conference is looking at attracting more than 300 attendees locally, regionally and internationally. We are being supported by Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC) and are looking at partnering with more local and international sustainability-related forums and organizations.
