Job creation in Oman key to realising long-term plan

Offering necessary training will open doors for Omanis to gain skills and be prepared for the job market

Oman’s recent announcement that it is aiming to create thousands of jobs for Omani citizens this year is an important step. The task of creating so many jobs is part of the government’s long-term plan to include nationals in the development process of the country.

“This year, we have plans to create 56,000 jobs for young Omanis. We have 20,000 vacancies in the military and 16,000 in civil service”, said the Finance Minister, Darwish Bin Esmail Al Beloushi. The government has spent around 300 million riyals on this job-creation scheme, according to Al Beloushi. In addition, the government has increased spending on the sectors of education and training in its recently-approved budget. It is unquestionable that providing an education that will be suitable for a changing job market is the right approach. Offering necessary training will also open doors for Omanis to gain skills and be prepared to enter the job market, both in the private and public sectors. Most important of all is that such training is continued in the medium and long term.
