The University of Dubai, as one of the initiatives of Dubai Chamber, announced today the launch of its College of Law and Master of Laws (LLM) program following official approval from the UAE’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The event was attended by His Excellency Mohammad Al Murr, Speaker of Federal National Council (FNC), His Excellency Abdul RahmanSaif Al Ghurair, the Chairman of Dubai Chamber, His Excellency Majid Al Shamsi, the Chairman of University of Dubai Board of Trustees and 1st Vice Chairman of the Dubai Chamber, Her ExcellencyRaja Al Gurg, Vice Chairperson of University of Dubai Board of Trustees and Board Member of the Dubai Chamber. His Excellency Dr. Eesa Bastaki, University of Dubai President, and Mark Beer, OBE and Registrar of DIFC Courts. The program will offer two tracks focusing on key business and commercial areas: Arbitration & Dispute Resolution (ADR), and Financial Crimes & Money Laundering (FCML).

Commenting on the launching of the College of Law,MajidAl Shamsistated that: “The University of Dubai is very proud to be launching this prestigious program. In line with the University’s mission of providing world-class educational opportunities to students, we have established the College of Law and are launching these programs as an investment in talent within the legal sector. Our current and future students are the leaders of tomorrow. Graduates of this program will go on to make a valuable contribution to the economic growth and stability of our society together with other societies across the region and the world, be it specifically in the field of law or related sectors. This move is in line with the UAE’s Vision 2021, which is focused on investing in and developing education, in line with economic and social development within the region, and this aligns closely to the University of Dubai’s founding beliefs.”
At the launching event held in the Dubai Chamber, Dr. Bastaki said: “We are pleased to launch the College of Law and to launch its Master of Laws program (LLM).This newly launched Master of Laws program is designed to fulfill the aspirations of students who wish to pursue a successful career in law and related fields. The UAE legal system has played a vital role in the country’s economic development and as we see further development in this field, we want to make sure the highest standard of education is available for students interested in entering this sector. This highly specialized program not only prepares students to meet complex business challenges in the legal fraternity but also equips them to occupy the highest legal offices in the UAE and abroad. In addition, the LLM offers students unique opportunities to network with practicing attorneys, senior practitioners and business lawyers in all areas of law.”
Mark Beer, who was a guest speaker at the event, said: “DIFC Courts is committed to excellence in every area of its operations. With this commitment comes the responsibility to ensure that the law is respected and the practice of law is to the highest level. Thus, legal education is a particular interest for DIFC Courts, supporting the development of programs designed to improve the practice of law in our Courts. I am delighted, therefore, to speak today at the launch of The University of Dubai’s College of Law and its LLM program. I must congratulate Dubai Chamber and the University for their fore-sight in bringing this forward and I share their confidence that this will contribute to raising standards in legal practice in the UAE.”
The University of Dubai’s strong link with Dubai Chamber further opens up unique opportunities for aspiring law graduates. Consequently, the Dubai Chamber asked for the formation of the LLM Program, especially in its role in formulating business policy, dispute resolution, mediation and arbitration. Alongside this strategic partnership, University of Dubai has recently signed memorandums of understanding with the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources, the Securities and Commodities Authority, and the Financial Audit Department of the Government of Dubai. These close links with the Government provide several opportunities for the students of the University of Dubai, as well as government employees, in the form of degrees offered, internships and job placements, consultancy, research and joint seminars and conferences.
During the event, Dr.Harold Koster, newly appointed Director of The College of Law explained: “The LLM course, which will be offered over a period of 12 months, incorporates a rigorous curriculum with a strong focus on understanding fundamental legal principles which are essential for every law graduate and lawyer. To provide students with further knowledge in general principles of law, the modules will offer training in specialized areas such as arbitration, mediation and moot court practice, among other concentrations.”
The internationally recognized program, taught in English, will consist of 11 courses which make up 36 credit hours in total and will run on a module basis with 15-week terms. Admission is currently open to Law graduates in addition to non-Law graduates.
