Four new British schools to open in Dubai

Dubai: The opening of four new British curriculum schools worth Dh500 million was announced on Monday at the British Embassy.

The schools, which will open in phases through 2016-2019, will be managed by Gabbitas Educational Consultants, one of the UK’s premier independent education consultancies, which also announced the opening of their new offices in Dubai.

The four schools, owned by businessman Mohan Valrani, will consist of two primary and two secondary schools, which will be located in Jumeirah Village Triangle (JVT) and Al Furjan in Dubai.

“I wanted to leave a legacy behind, and found that opening the schools to give back to the Dubai community is the best way to do that because education is the solution to all the problems of the world,” said Valrani, the former chairman of Indian High School.

Ian Hunt, Managing Director of Gabbitas Educational Consultants, told Gulf News that if the Knowledge and Human Development Authority approves, the schools will be named British School, JVT and British School, Al Furjan.

Commenting on the opening of the new consultancy, which started operating yesterday (April 28) in Tecom, Hunt said: “Gabbitas has been working to help families access the best of British education for well over 100 years and we believe the time is right for us to open in the Middle East, where there is strong demand for more personalised and better informed services regarding schooling and higher education.”

The education consultancy will provide a comprehensive tailored school placement service in Dubai — with consultants advising on the best independent schools for children and offering a full guardianship service for overseas students at UK boarding schools.

Gabbitas will also provide expert guidance in the selection of and application to overseas universities. Other services include bespoke packages for career advice, guides to independent schools, and summer school programmes. In addition, a dedicated special educational needs consultancy is available.

Edward Hobart, Consul General at the British Embassy in Dubai, who hosted the event, commented on the opening of the school and consultancy saying: “I’m delighted to see more British Education Service providers enter the UAE market. The educational and cultural links between the UAE and UK are deep and thriving.

There are eight branch campuses of UK universities in the UAE and nearly 3,000 Emirati students are studying at UK higher education institutions.”
